Immense Hip Hop Festival: Back To The City 2018

For the past 12 years Freedom Day has been known to be celebrated through the hip hop culture. Back To The City has impressively made the festival huge with most hip hop artists all over the world coming to South Africa and celebrating Freedom Day.

The event was well organized from the entrance with an impressive order from the clothing displays, food stalls and I must emphasize on the service rendered at their beverage bar (no stampedes). Ran into homie Skyzoo taking a stroll and he was on his own, that’s how comfortable & safe I bet he felt thanks to the security placed. Most importantly, I love how the organizers went all out to accommodate wheelchair basketball players and allowed them to take part of this very important day. From underground and commercial hip hop, this is where upcoming artists and media houses are given a platform to showcase their talents not forgetting networking.

The Power Play stage always makes me question both my left feet as the dance crews show their skills with DJ’s battling against each. The band stage had a much laid back crowd with artists interacting with everyone. The clothing stalls displayed all kind of talent, from handmade shoes, earings, bags, not forgetting I wear Black outfits and custom made tops & hats from Poi-Poi nation.

Let’s talk about the main stage. The line-up was shuffled in a manner that kept everyone on their toes as no one could predict the next performance or wish they arrived late for the “big major” artists to perform. The stage was lit from onset with Priddy Ugly, Patty Monroe, Mr Swagganova “K.O”, Cassper Nyovest to PRO, Youngsta, PDOT”God Bless The God Blessed”, DJ ZanD, DJ Switch, Ricky Rick, Reason Jovi Slash with Mr Selwyn and not forgetting the performance from veterans Optical Ill. International veteran Pharoahe Monch took the stage and gave a killer performance “I will not leave the stage until I give you all my blood” so he said.

NB: This stage was never about who has made a name for themselves or well known. It was about hip hop and will always be about hip hop.

Sadly, the organisers announced that the Festival will be coming to an end in 2021. So if you haven’t been to the event or had plans to come through some day, then I suggest you act now and buy tickets that will give you access for the next 3 years. You can make bookings or enquire about the tickets at

Thank you so much to all sponsors involved, the organisers and everyone for always staying true to the culture.

Love and Light.
